Make a Hummingbird Feeder

Hummingbirds will take sugar water from artificial feeders. These feeders allow you to observe and enjoy hummingbirds up close while providing the birds with a reliable source of energy, especially when flower blossoms are less abundant.

Hummingbird Nectar Recipe

1 part sugar
4 parts water

Bring the water to a boil and slowly add the sugar. Boil for a few minutes. Let cool and store any excess nectar in the refrigerator.

Only white granulated sugar is proven safe to use in hummingbird feeders. A ratio of 1 cup sugar to 4 cups water is a common recipe. Boiling and then cooling this mixture before use is recommended to help deter the growth of bacteria and yeasts. Do not add red food dye as it may be harmful to the birds.

These feeders should be cleaned weekly with dish soap and hot water and rinsed well to prevent harmful bacteria build-up or soured sugar water.
